First Tasmanian to receive a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
Hi, My name is Wil, I’m 31 years old, a husband and father of three. My two oldest kids and I joined SMAA about 6 months ago as a fun way to get fit and learn self-defence. In that time I’ve discovered that Adam and Jen are about so much more than providing excellent service, they are about community, family and helping teach our next generation about respect and self-confidence. I’m so excited for my kids and me to learn and grow in the coming years and believe we’re in the best place to do just that. Every time I walk into the gym I feel welcome and at home. I consider all of my classmates to be friends and love seeing new faces join class, I just can’t express how happy I am to have found my SMAA family. Love you guys,
BJJ (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu) is a martial art that focuses on grappling and ground fighting. Our kids classes cater to different age groups of 4+ years and 8-13 years (children over 14 years attend our adult’s classes). Our classes focus on self-defence and the sport of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Classes cater to students of all levels.
Children over 11 years have the opportunity to train for the SMAA competition team to compete in local Tasmanian competitions. Come along, have some fun and make some new friends.
How to Start My first Class?
Getting started in your first class is easy, all classes cater for all experience levels, from beginner to advanced. All are welcome.
To get started you don’t need any equipment or specialised clothing. Just wear loose-fitting clothing that allows movement and bring a drink bottle.
For your first class arrive at the gym 10 minutes early to be shown through and meet your instructor.
For more information contact Adam Newton on 0404 285 851.
What Do I Need to do Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
When you first start training you will need to wear comfortable clothing that you can move in easily, for example, shorts and a T-shirt.
To continue your training you’ll need to purchase a BJJ gi (uniform), rash vest and optional mouthguard. This can be purchased at the club or elsewhere. It is not necessary to have all this equipment to start your first class, but you will need it as you progress.
Here at the Sorell Martial Arts Academy, we have boxing bags and equipment to help you train in the sport under the supervision of our qualified instructors who will help you achieve your goals.
