I’ve been training at SMAA for a few years now. Adam and Jen do an amazing job of making everybody feel welcome and like they are part of more than just a team. The culture of the club is very open and positive making learning and teaching a pleasure. I couldn’t imagine training anywhere else with a better group of people.

Start your journey in Judo

Our Judo class caters to complete beginners to advanced athletes. Learn for fun or for competition.

Judo is the national sport of Japan. Our Kids Judo classes are conducted by instructor Adam Newton. Students learn the fundamental skills of Judo which include break falling, throws and wrestling.

Judo is a very popular sport and is represented at the Olympics.

SMAA are affiliated with Judo Tasmania and as such provide a high level of accredited Judo training. With gradings and regular competitions, there are no limits to how far you can take your training.

Our instructor Adam Newton started his Judo training at the age of 7 years and went on to represent Tasmania and Australia in Judo competition.

How to Start My first Class?

Getting started in your first class is easy, all classes cater for all experience levels, from beginner to advanced. All are welcome.

To get started you don’t need any equipment or specialised clothing. Just wear loose-fitting clothing that allows movement and bring a drink bottle.

For your first class arrive at the gym 10 minutes early to be shown through and meet your instructor.

For more information contact Adam Newton on 0404 285 851.

What Do I Need to do Judo?

When you first start training you will need to wear comfortable clothing that you can move in easily.

To continue your training you’ll need to purchase a Judo gi (uniform). This can be purchased at the club or elsewhere. It is not necessary to have your gi to start your first class, but you will need it as you progress.

Here at the Sorell Martial Arts Academy, we have a suitable matted floor to provide a safe surface for the practice of Judo. We also have crash mats and other equipment to help students learn how to throw and fall safely. Under the supervision of our qualified instructors, we will help you achieve your Judo goals.
